Jovany Chediak: Brickell City Centre

            In a visit with Jovany Chediak, who is a Landscape Designer for an organization known as Arquitectonica Geo, he provided the class with a very in-depth look at a project he and his company were working on called Brickell City Centre. Jovany got on board with the project in 2011 and has been an integral part of the team since. Brickell City Centre is a mixed-use development in the financial district of Miami that is owned and operated by Swire Properties, Incorporated. The project is on 12 acres of land and has a total development cost of over 1 billion dollars. Arquitectonica Geo was brought on to be the landscape architect of the development and Jovany points out that his organization’s goal was to bridge the gap between landscaping and development. By that he meant that the company wanted the landscaping to be a major part of the development. Since the project is not in a prime location near the water, Arquitectonica Geo wanted to ensure that they created amenities with their landscaping designs.

            Though the picture below doesn’t do nearly as good a justice as what Jovany showed the class, it does show the scale at which the project spans. This is a huge mixed-use development that incorporates over 5 million total square feet of space that will be used for office, retail, hotel, residential, and entertainment. There’s also two levels of underground parking that cover over 7 acres of land below the development. The site will also include a mass transit integration with the Miami Metromover on the Southeast end.

Ultimately, Jovany’s job in this development was to create open spaces for people while integrating the project’s architecture. Overall, he was successful in that the landscaping will be a vital part of why people flock to Brickell City Centre. This is because it is not your tradition sense of landscaping. The designs that Arquitectonica Geohas have been able to implement into the Centre will leave patrons in awe of what they see. Between the beautiful greenery, the unique designs, and the Climate Ribbon that they have created, Brickell City Centre will be a modern day marvel right in the heart of Miami.
